10 Critical Questions to Ask When Choosing a Nursing Home

Knowing what to ask during a nursing home visit prevents a poor decision. List these 10 questions and compare the answers from each facility.

1–3. Staff and Healthcare Services

1. How many residents are assigned per nurse? Ideal: 1/10 at night, 1/6 during the day 2. Is there 24-hour nursing coverage? What are the shift hours? 3. Do you have an agreement with a nearby hospital? What is the emergency procedure?

4–6. Living Conditions

4. What are the room types? Is there a price difference between single/double rooms? 5. How is the menu prepared? Are there dietary options? (diabetic, low-sodium, etc.) 6. What are the social activities? What is the condition of the garden and common areas?

7–8. Fees and Contracts

7. What exactly is included in the monthly fee and what is not? (are medication, diapers, physiotherapy extra?) 8. How long is the contract term? Is there a penalty for early departure?

Red Flags
